To be able to put a rough cut together i had to drag and drop the clips in order to start to show some sort of continuity, after then putting the clips in order of continuity i then start external cutting and this is simply cutting down/ removing things like the clapperboard. When the external cutting was over i then started trimming clips because it created things such as match on action which obviously at that point shows my understanding for what they are.

Unit 9 Digital Editing Learning Aim C.
In order for me to have been able to understand the brief i highlighted the things i needed to be able to do in task 3, which specifies as to what i have to do. In order for me to meet my deadline which is the 18th of december at 10am, but to help me meet my deadline on the 18th i was given mini deadlines which will help keep me on task and also up to date in my work
When viewing the raw material i imported the footage by going to resources then Level 2 Media then Unit 9 editing footage. I then watched the footage back in which helped me to determine whether the footage is good or bad. To choose the footage that i thought was good, i held down the command button which enabled me to select multiple clips that were good and i then imported them into my final cut project.
While logging footage, there are different shots in which i realised that there are a number of scenes in which are of the same things but from different angles but the reason as to why choosing the same scene from numerous angles is good is because when editing it then creates a match on action.

Purposes Of Editing
Montage:
A montage is where the editor of the video
cuts down a scene in which would have taken days and months and basically
condenses into a few minutes and in team America training scene as he goes
through training it speeds up but also keeps the audience captivated but most
importantly they’re still engaged with the film and have not lost the plot and
they are also able to see progress through out his training process.
Cross
Cutting:
Cross cutting
is where the editor cuts from one action to another in different locations to
show that they are all happening at the same time. For example, in star wars
there were different cross cuts of different locations but the essence of the
cross cut is to show that they are all happening at the same time
Slow Motion:
Slow motion
is where the editor slows down real life action. Slow motion is also used for
dramatic effect and in the film inception slow motion is used to enhance the
impact of the explosions and also how big they are. This also has an effect on
the audience so that they can see the effect and also see the detail.
Jump-cut:
A jump cut
is where there is a break in continuity so therefore a flash of a character gives effect to show
moving forward in time, jump cuts where originally introduced by George Melies
and fight club is a good example of this.
Cuts:
This
is where the editor cuts from one scene to another. This is known as cutting.
It was originally taking a roll of film and physically cutting bits and
sticking them together. This was used back in the days in Edwin porter’s days.
A good example of this is in the film avengers. The purpose of using cuts in
the avenger’s film was to see three different action events. When Thor one of
the characters says ‘is that the best you got’, and it cuts to the scene where
ultron minions start attacking the avengers. This carries on the story and
helps the audience understand what happing or what is going to happen next.
Split
screen:
This
is where the editor takes two separate footages and joins it to make one. It is
also a division of the screen showing two things at the same time. A good
example of this would be in the snatch cousin Avi film. The purpose of using a
split screen in the cousin avi film was to show the conversation of the two men
that are in two different locations. As it allows the audience to see bought
perspective at the same time it also makes it easier for the creators of the
film to film. What I mean is that instead of going back and forth with the
conversation (which would be longer to edit) i is easier to just put in a split
screen this way you can add in more footage like the Hollywood montage.
180
degree rule:
This is
where the editor establishes and maintains the screen direction of their action
or actors in the scene. This is known as the 180 degree rule (continuity
editing) (invisible editing). The 180 degree rule was used when the man opened
the first door in the Continuity Sequence - Step by Step video, then we see the man again
however we see him from the inside of the building opening the second door.
This is to show flow and to show that the man did not just disappear has he
walked through the first door. This allows the audience to be engaged in the
scene.

Resubmission Work.
Genre, is a form of defining what is being watched or what
type of film a film is, genre helps the audience to be able to identify as to
whether the film may be crime, action, thriller etc. The audience should be able to recognise the genre if the tv series
because it immediately appeals to certain people even before they watch and it
is important so that the makers know who their primary audience is, but the
problem with misfits is that it is a mixture of sci-fi and teen drama and it is
under stable for a program to have more than one genre but learnt from my
teacher is that although want to reach a wider range of people which will more
or less increase to profit in terms of income but regardless of that, the
mixture of different genres in one show comes across as immoral and may even
cause some sort with viewers who are maybe fans of just the one out of the two.
The narrative in which is used in Misfits Season 1, episode
4, is about a guy named Curtis who gets confronted by his girlfriend who is
angry at him because he is in her life again. Most importantly, it is important
to identify the fact that this story is told in a non-linear narrative and the
reason as to why a non-linear narrative is used is because it is more
intriguing and if used properly it makes the audience think as to what is
happening and almost throws them off but throws them off but they’re also
hooked and are eager as to carry on watching as the story uncovers, for example
at the start of this episode, Curtis uses his super power to go back in time to
try and rectify his wrongs in which put him in the predicament that he is going
though in the present and also in this episode flashbacks are used well but
also going forward into time and seeing what happens. In the way the story is
set up and executed makes me as a part of the audience says two important
things to me, and the first one is that i am able to recognize just from
watching that Misfits is a sci-fi drama and the conventions of sci-fi are
things like having super powers, and things happening that are not normal to
everyday life. The way as to way the episode is important because although
there has been some sort of resolution as the audience have gained an idea as
to what is happening but there is something at the end which makes them want to
go on and watch the next episode and the reason as to why this is important is
because if something is a series then the makers of the show are expecting a
constant level of viewers every week.
Another thing that i noticed when watching this episode is
that there is a deliberate attempt to put the audience where a certain
character is, which is done effectively especially with the point of view shot.
For example when Curtis goes back in time gives off a sense of suspense as what
is about to happen is completely unknown to the viewers and then all of a
sudden…. With the use of an extreme close up of his eyes the audience is
transformed to another location
In this Skins trailer, there are a range of different things
that need to be evaluated such as, stereotypes, being able to establish
different characters through behavioral methods etc. In programs such as
skins, there’ll always be the sarcastic self-aware, the juvenile
delinquent/rebel, popular one, the reclusive troubled outsider and geek and these
features are things that make a good teen drama.
In this clip I personally think that this screen grab is a
very good representation of the rebel, because I know that he is the one that
is starting the trouble, also like the popular attractive one I know that this
also his aim to come to the pub and do this, also with this screen grab because
of the everything being rude it puts off a very negative vibe and energy, the
screen of him holding the bat while fighting also shows his causing trouble but
most importantly re-assures me that he is the leader of the whole group. This
girl is also a rebel as, I discovered that she is an adolescent so she wants to
be really mature, go to pubs, drink but at the same time doing things like this
are also very childish.

This image shows the popular attractive one because, for him
to be doing this with a girl obviously shows what his priorities are and I know
that as the popular attractive one, getting off with a girl is probably his
main reason for coming out with that group of friends and also being that they
took pills earlier on in the clip also shows that he is somewhat of a rebel.
The camera is also of blurred on purpose because the director is trying to
place the audience in the scene by blurring them a bit, to show that they are
high off of the pill that they took.

My last example is the sarcastic self-aware one because is
they both know exactly what they are doing as they both have made a conscious
decision to behave in that way because, they know that if they behave in that
way then, it’s going to irritate the adults more than they are already because
first of all for them to invading on those adults personal space in the way
that they did. Also the fact that they are taking as a joke when going to pub
and socialising is one of the adult’s only ways having a break away from
stressful things like work, paying bills etc.
The way in which the camera moves in this trailer is
important, because funny enough the way the camera moves can put in the same
place as someone, tell us how a certain person is feeling, give us a feel of
the surroundings of a characters area.
A tracking shot in this trailer is used to indicate what is
happening around/the characters and again this is to give the audience a sense
of importance as the camera is doing what i would most likely be doing if i was
in a situation like that, even when a character took a drugs the camera then
moves slowly into a close shot of her and this is to portray how she feels.
There are things/characteristics that say a lot as to how a
character is feeling and this is known as mise-en-scene, but not only
mise-en-scene, camera work is also to be considered when looking at these things to identify when
certain things are done one purpose, so for example there is a shot of the
reclusive troubled outsider but not just any random shot, this shot is a high
angle shot which shows that the person is vulnerable doesn't really have a
say/power to do anything. For example the male who is classed as a geek, the
shot of him sitting down on the floor by himself while there is literally chaos
happening, gives off the impression that he is left out and possibly isolated
and also with his expressions it is a bit obvious that this male is out of his
comfort zone.
Sound in this trailer is used and executed properly, sound
is obviously used to portray how are character feels or to portray the mood of
the whole group and the most important thing is that as a result of that music
corresponding with how the characters are feeling it also then will most likely
strike the same emotion with the audience, for example the background could be
going at a fast pace to be able interpret that a lot is happening at the time.
This trailer is set at night and the lighting is in this
trailer gives off the vibe of an evening. In the pub the extras who are acting
as the adult are dressed casually but they a made to look a bit rough because
they are supposed to adults who are having down time from work and are trying
to enjoy a night out. At the point when the main characters enter the pub they
appear to be in rather comfortable and used to the environment when they are
actually supposed to feel the completely opposite as they are in environment
that is filled people that aren’t even in their age group. The props in the pub
scene consist of a bar, drink, pool tables, cards etc. Some of these shots are
used as establishing shots and the way this is done by showing the props one
after another. There is a contrast in terms of feelings because when the main
characters walk into the pub they are excited and are happy but obviously the
adults who are actually supposed to be the ones feeling that way are now
feeling bitter towards the main characters as they are invading their privacy
and the one place where they can most likely be worry free and now the problem
seems to follow them around.
Some of the characters are filmed in groups which is done to
obviously establish who the group of friends are, close ups or extreme close
ups in this context also says to us that we are going to get to know these
characters a bit more as we go on but also camera angle and framing is used to
establish the sort of relationship between certain characters for example,
there is ground level shot of a girl and this also says that she is an outsider
to the group but also for example mid-shots also help to establish
relationships between certain characters. I also noticed that the music
sometimes gets louder as a character is maybe being aggressive or maybe losing
control and when the character reaches a breaking point, the music also reaches
a climax and all of this is done to simply emphasise feelings and emotions.
Music, sound effects, foley etc are important because without it, things don’t
sound realistic and also is less likely for the viewers to have an emotion or
be bothered to have an opinion.
The characters that are filmed in slow motion when jumping
off the road, this is executed using low angle shot and the effect of using a
low angle shot when they’re jumping off the roof is because it makes them look
powerful as the have obviously escaped from doing bad things and also connotes
that they are free to do whatever they want, one thing I also noticed is that
when they are jumping off the roof in slow motion, it gives the audience a
chance to be able to see each individual clearly.
In conclusion to some of the points some of the points I
just made, these characters conform to their stereotypes because it is an easy
way for me to identify who is who but also for the audience to be able to
connect with certain characters as they may have similar personalities and in
reality, we know that some of the things that happen in skins or in teen dramas
are a bit over the top but the main reason as to why the directors choose to
over exaggerate characters and make it a bit unrealistic is because they know
that even though they aren’t always portraying the exact qualities of those
types of teenagers.

Learning aim B: Technical Areas.
The target audience/ audiences for this skins extended
trailer, are normally teenagers, but secondary audience for this show could be
older adults who now work and watch to simply reminisce back to when they were
maybe like that and is now used as a form of nostalgia, the purpose of this
teenage drama is to simple create entertainment, cause conversation amongst
peers, and also find ways of dealing with different social problems that people
may go through in their everyday lives, also the younger audiences who watch
this also get the vibe that the older people actually behave like this which
makes them think is normal and this is important because this is the hypodermic
needle theory being put into play as the program is manipulating certain people
to believe that certain things are normal.
The lighting and colour
used in this trailer reflects the mood of the character because for example
when the rebel amongst the group decided to look for trouble and light up a
flare, the whole essence of the red is to simply connote that his presence
brings danger and someone to most likely not be affiliated with. The location
of this whole scene is extremely important as they know that they are in a
place where they are not supposed to be which therefore makes the whole narrative
more interesting. All the characters are framed together in a group when
entering the scene for the first time which shows that they are all friends,
and most likely close. In certain scenes during this extended trailer, there
are parts where the camera goes out of focus simply because the director is
trying to place us in the scene and he camera going out of focus is very
effective as we as the audience now know that they are most-likely intoxicated
or on some sort of ‘high’. Another reason as to why the directors like to place
the audience in the scene is to stop confusion because for example in the final
scene when they all decide to jump of off the roof, I did not really know who
was jumping off of the roof because it was quite sudden but then I could tell
that during the editing process the director chose to highlight each individual
character so that the audience would know who they were and also the reason as
to why the camera angle used during this part of the scene is to show that they
managed to escape from that predicament that they were in which would obviously
make them feel as though they are higher than all the others in which they most
likely they will feel superior.
The pace of the editing can be quickened up at times but
also slowed down again simply to create effect and once again to put us in the
same environment as the audience so for example if the group is running the movement
of the camera would clearly show that they are running which puts us; the
audience in their position.
Btec L2 Creative Digital Media Unit 3.A&B
‘Urban Net’ A assignment 12th October- 23rd October 2015.
The reason as to why I decided to use the “f**k the poor
advert, is because I think that it is a very good representation of a
promotional advert, which gives me room to analyse the key features of a
promotional clip, such as things like: demographics, psychographics, viral buzz
etc.
First of all, I think that this promotional advert appeals
to certain demographic and psychographic groups of people. I think that the
demographic of people that this advert is aimed at would be the working class
because I get a sense that it is rush hour and the clothes that most of the
people are wearing are quite formal or carrying bags, and also seem to be in a
rush somewhere. After watching the video
back again, I realised that this video isn’t just aimed at working class people
who would have money to donate, but there is also a homeless guy in that video
who confronts the guy with the banner and to be homeless, you’re most likely
going to be in a low demographic group.
The problem with trying to analyse or identify what
demographic group a certain clip is aimed or targeted at is the fact that demographics
are not necessarily always accurate because it is difficult to isolate a whole
group of people to one demographic.
Since we have now established the fact, demographics are not
really accurate in all instances and does not always give a detailed insight
into the target audience. The only other way of sorting this problem and being
more accurate, would be the use of psychographics and the use of psychographics
is more effective because now I’m not looking at how much you earn and the
difference with using psychographics is the fact that an advert can be targeted
at more than one psychographic group and psychographics looks at one’s
lifestyle and personality. This advert is a very good representation of an
advert that can be targeted at more than one psychographic group because I
believe that this ‘f**k the poor’ advert is aimed at reformers who are people
who want certain things to change and are also not very happy by status and
make certain decisions based upon their values and I think that this advert is
aimed at reformers is because, if I was to be a reformer and I was on my way to
work and I saw that I would be personally obliged to stop and have a go at man
who is putting up that banner saying ‘f**k the poor’ because based upon on my
values I would think that what he is doing is wrong. Another psychographic
group that this advert maybe targeted is the mainstreamers, this may be a bit
weird but the reason as to why I say mainstreamers is because there are people
who would see such a banner and not really be phased by it and really not care
although it may sound unbelievable, there are actually people that would not be
bothered if they saw that but for example if I was his/her friend who was a
reformer and I started to have a go at him, my friend who is a mainstreamer
would most likely going to join me even though he doesn't really care, but the
reason as to why decides to join his/her friend who is a reformer is because as
a mainstreamer, ones personality indicates that, that person likes to follow the
crowd.
The reason as to why I personally think that this
promotional advert is a great advert is because of the persuasive/emotional
appeal used, but the thing is that emotional appeal is used in most promotional
adverts where the audience is being asked to donate money but what makes this
advert different?
What makes this advert different is the fact the obviously
know to use emotional and persuasive techniques in their advert but the key
thing is when and how they did that because they did not just start the advert
by showing a poor person and telling the audience what that person has been
going though, so the fact that the advert did not start in that manner but
started with such a bold statement would capture people’s eyes, but I think
that the director of this advert obviously did not want anyone to think that
this was advert and the fact that this advert did not come across as an advert
in the first half as well with a statement that would have shocked a lot people
is one of the biggest reasons as to why this advert even went viral. Now going
back to how the persuasive/emotional techniques have been used in a different
way is the way the directors waited for the audience to get so angry at that
man standing there with that banner because what he is doing is obviously so
insane but then the audiences emotion almost instantly changes when there is a
plot twist and now the audience now sees how people react when it is something
normal that everyone sees and the technique the director used here is emotional
manipulation but I also think that he used emotional manipulation as well was
using some of the six elements of buzz because even though the director made
the audience feel a number of different emotions he still had to in-corporate
the outrageous to be able to get our attention but then slowly reel the
audience into the main message of the advert which is to obviously help the
poor. At the end of the advert there is website link that can be clicked on
where the audience can also make their own contribution and by making this
advert
interactive with the audience, people are most likely going
to donate at that point especially if maybe they feel guilty at the end of that
advert because you know that you would say something if you saw ‘f**k the poor’
banner but when you see ‘help the poor’ you act like it’s nothing.

Stereotypes(Skins)
In this
skins trailer, there are quite a lot of things that represent the life of
teenagers who are roughly between the ages of 17-20. In the opening scene of
this trailer there is obviously a party going on and
the typical things that one would think would happen in a teenage party such
as: drinking, dancing, kissing etc. The scene has been put together in this way
because they are portrayed as very irresponsible and carefree which are the sorts
of characteristics that are associated with the majority of people of that age.
A majority of teen dramas have certain stereotypes and appearances that
portrayed or presented on purpose and other than the fact that he is most
likely established as one of the main characters. The leader of the group in
Skins gets most of the attention for the girls and in the trailer he is holding
a gun and what I recently found out that the fact that he is holding a water
gun is something called falic imagery because it is obviously supposed to send
a message across.
In a majority of teen dramas the directors try
and make it as controversial so therefore they and try and deal with things
such as: relationships, cheating in relationships, sex, drugs, rehab, police,
prison etc.
In conclusion, in terms of teen dramas
like Skins, other than the fact that they are aimed for teenagers, I was also
taught that quite a lot of people in their thirties actually watch this show
and that was a bit odd for me but after being explained to, the main reason why
people in their thirties watch this program is because to them it is a good to
sit down, kick back, relax and reminisce back to when they were like that so
for them it is almost like an hour nostalgia.
