Audience feedback

Self-evaluation of Urban Net edit

Firstly, the strengths of my edit were things like the usage of the black screen background. It took no time at all as I didn’t have to go through a great deal looking for a black background, the reason as to why this worked well is simply because of the different colours of plastacine the we used, so instead of having a background that would end of clashing with the colours of the plastacine, we just ended up using black which I personally think is a good decision.
A strong point of the ident was the use of the background music as it fit the pace of the editing. For example there were transitions in which the music purposely went in time with the transition. The music helps the transition seem a lot smoother and professional. The expert in which I spoke to agrees with this concept. I also used a lot of colour effect over the whole edit but a different colour almost like every second. This also worked well with the background music. Also, as an extra point the piece of music in which was used was actually created just for the sole use of the ident.

A big thing in which I personally feel could be improved upon could be the animation, simply because although it is not obvious, the purpose of creating an ident is to give the channel an identity and create a story and what I think needs to be improved upon was how well the ident was shot in regards to the movement of the figures could have been closer together.
The most visually appealing thing in the ident would how well we played around with the plastacine for example the concept of the snake coming in at the end and then one of the letters hitting the letter next to it and then spinning was thought of on the spot simply as a result having excess plastacine .

In conclusion, the original intentions and purpose I wanted from the ident were met and even other things were able to be added such as the snake and other things mentioned earlier. I also feel as though that this ident serves its purpose and also appeals to its target audience.

Script For Ident

Video
(Explain in detail to the actors direction, what they do, where and how. Also explain the lighting, locations, time of day, where, when and any props. Include shot types in how you want this photographed)

Audio
(explain the sound effects, music or dialogue and when they are used in relation to the shots)
SHOT 1

M.S – The ident will start with the camera being static focusing on nothing, as all that is being seen is a completely black screen. This shot will be held for a roughly about 2-3 seconds

Shot 2
M.S – This next shot will have the camera also static but out of focus, but in addition to the black background, we will be able to see the the colour purple but as a result of the camera being out of focus we are not able to make out what exactly is purple and even what it is doing there.

Shot 3
C.U – For this shot the the camera is now fully in focus as we are now able to see the letter 'U' with legs walking up and down.

Shot 4
C.U – At this point in time, the camera is not static anymore as the letters 'U', 'N', 'B', 'R' start bouncing around the black screen which each character individually trying to make the term 'urban net'

Shot 5
M.S – the camera then zooms outwards as more letters are coming from a corner, but these letters are new letters and are being added onto the existing letters. While this is happening, beat editing will be used while roving and going from one letter to another.

Shot 6
W.S- At this point all the letters that make up the term 'urban net' are now bouncing around obviously in different colors to represent different people in which consist in our target audience.

Shot 7
L.S/ – At this point in time, all of the characters in the term 'urban net' now come together to obviously form 'urban net' alongside with the website written down in a smaller font.

SFX

At the start of the ident nothing will be heard in the background.

The background music will start to be heard but the dominant sound at this point in time, will be footsteps increasing in volume as the logo the purple silhouette is clearly walking towards to audience but yet we are still unable to figure out what it actually is

Once again, as this is happening footsteps will be heard with the background music getting progressively higher.

At this point in time in the sequence, the background music will be most dominant but now instead of footsteps, each character is now a bit more bouncy so that would be the sound effect in motion.

At this point in time in the sequence, the background music will be most dominant but now instead of footsteps, each character is now a bit more bouncy so that would be the sound effect in motion.

The music continues, however with the use of automation it then gets louder as we are now reaching a pivotal point of the ident

While all of this is going on, the music remains consistent.

Evaluation of Editing.

During the editing process of 'My random acts of kindness' video, there are different types of editing techniques that i used such as fast paced editing and the video was only 30 seconds. There are also other edits which were used such as, continuity editing in order to make the video flow, match on action's were also used in certain shots and cross dissolve as well.

My video has a linear narrative structure which is basically a beginning, middle and end, this is also done in order for the audience to understand the message and purpose clearly. The message is simply a random act of kindness featuring someone who puts different sort of equipment in a box which people of ages 16-25 who are in college, university etc in which is given to another person with a big sign on the box which says 'pass it on' and this same thing happens with someone passing it onto someone else until someone then opens it, takes all the stuff out obviously for his/her own benefit but then as a result of the message, the person goes and then puts another set of equipment's in the box and then the same pattern obviously then repeats itself which is to simplify the whole notion of 'pass it on'. During the whole editing process i could have used alternative editing techniques like special effects which would have made the audience interact more which would've made the advert gone viral which is something for me to improve on in the future.

Techniques used were very suitable and worked well to make sure that I would have kept my audiences attention as my target audience are youth of 16-25 years of age college and university students who may be living away from home as young people are known to have short attention spams.
My peers commented that one of my most effective techniques was how well i made the video flow.

Also, there were shots that were cut accurately to create match on actions and this is when i was not able to put certain shots in this viral advert simply because of the time limit that the client had set so therefore, there were basically two different shots that were put together but at the same time still made sense and most importantly, the audience did not necessarily understand and this was because the cuts were so accurate but then the use of cross dissolve also helped to execute these things. An example of this being executed properly was when one of the characters in my ROAK video started writing 'pass it on' on the box, but the whole shot was too long so what i did was show him starting to write 'pass it on and then using a cross dissolve showing him finishing writing 'pass it on''

In summary the editing techniques used in the creation of this project was successful in meeting the brief in that it was to be 30 seconds of fast pace editing with music to go along with that.

Proposal/ implementation plan.

Production company name: Urban Net.
Best way to contact us would be via e-mail of 15L0921@ctksfc.ac.uk

Working title: Urban Net – ‘keeping your contents urban’

Product Online:
The product will be around 15 seconds long for Urban Net. We are creating this ident because we want to brand the channel and give it an identity. We also want to entertain and teach youth to secure their future and keep it positive, because positivity breeds happiness.

Target Audience:
The target age is around 16-25 years old, in which will be different people of different ethnicity and background and in order for it to appeal to a variety of people, there needs to be things in which obviously appeal to these people.
Content:

A synopsis of the advert: The advert will be a thing where all the words of urban net bounce and come towards the same direction and then form the word urban net.

Structure:

Beginning - The beginning shall be a thing where the audience will be able to see all the words but it will be blurry.

Middle - They then will be able to see all the words coming together then they will all hit together and form 'urban net'

Colours:
The colours in the ident will be a variety of different colours, to simply express the feelings of the different people in which we are aiming to target, which also says to people that out channel is diverse and we also appeal to more than one specific demographic of people.

Animation materials/techniques
The animation in the ident will be stop-motion. This animation would appeal to the target audience and will be far easier to do within the amount of time given. It will also be using time-laps to create fast pace editing
Treatment: The client ordered different colours of plastecine, in which is obviously the main aspect which will enable this Ident to be executed properly.

Editing techniques
The editing will be at a fast pace during the creation of the ident. The ident will feature beat editing in order to appeal to the target audience.  It was also make the ident much more interesting.

Locations/Setting
The location will be in the art studio and however you will only be able to see the plain black background.

Music
The music that shall play in the background will be instrumental hip-hop music. I chose hip-hop music because my research has shown me this is the type of music that appeals most to my target audience.

Filming dates and time:
Planning should be finished along with the pre-production tasks for the 13th of May 2016. After that, the actual production of the animation should have been shot and finished by the 20th of May along with all of the post production. We then finally shall be ready to release/distribute the product on its different platforms
Budget:
The resources for this production will most likely be two lots of plastecine which should roughly be about £10.00
So the total cost will be about £20.00

Production Equipment:
The equipment that will be required during the production will be a camera with the use of maybe a tripod for still shots of the animation. And some type of script that the production can follow to for rehearsal.
Post production: After everything is done, this ident will be distributed on different forms of social media such as YouTube.
Format: YouTube high definition (HDV) 1080p

MERIT Task 4c: Present your idea to your target audience in a Focus Group and collect responses

Is it clear what has been adapted or developed from the existing products?

The participants of my focus group felt that i was clear in delivering my idea and they also understood where i was coming from and one person even said that they were able to actually visualise the idea and see it form.
Does the product appeal to you and why?

The idea in which was presented to the focus group appealed to them and this was because it was strategically explained to them and aspects in which i know they would have been not to sure as to how it would have been executed. I then elaborated the point and how it was going to go down.
Which ideas do you think are effective in creating the right image for the channel/artist?
Well firstly , i had two ideas and after explaining what the first idea was, everyone felt and including myself then saw how unpractical the idea was in regards to what we wanted to achieve using stock motion, Therefore my  focus group said they the found my second idea better which was creating the word 'Urban Net' in a very creative and fun way which appealed to them the most. They also felt that the idea was more appropriate to the sort of channel and target audience.

What ideas do you think I should include or change in my final idea?

The focus group did not feel that anything else needed to be changed as there was already an initial idea in which needed to be changed into this current one that we are talking about. They were only just talking about my use of plasticine and how much plasticine would be needed in order to execute this Ident properly.

Are there any products that you recommend I looked at?

My focus group recommended me to look at MTV idents and to focus on the colors and the theme.

DISTINCTION 4d) How large is the audience based on YouTube Hits, Downloads or Viewing figures

How big is the audience?
My target audience are not really that big as they are aged between 6-25 and I will be keeping it local. This decision only came around after my focus group suggested so

How popular are these products with audience?

E4 idents are very popular with 16-25 year old as they watch a lot of there shows per-day.

MERIT Task 5: Annotation
Each research task requires the following annotation - a clear aim and a summary of the research findings

Task 5a)
AIM what were you trying to find out from your research into TARGET AUDIENCE?
Use the following words in your response
What is the intended outcome of TARGET audience research
What is the intended outcome of FOCUS GROUP
What is the intended outcome of SURVEY MONKEY
TARGET - Age, Gender, Ethnicity
My target is  to find out the age, gender and ethnicity the audience think is appropriate  for my target audience.

My intended outcome for the focus group is for them to understand my idea and also for them to agree with the age, gender and ethnicity that the audience has chosen.
The purpose of the survey monkey is so that i can get some feedback as to what people like and what side they lean more to which will enable me to use that feedback into my own ident.
Preferences & expectations
My aim is that the target audience will be able to give their preferences and expectations in regards to to my idea. Which will then obviously enlighten me as to what to put in in the Ident.

My aim is that hopefully  the focus group will have a preference for the and idea, also that they will also give me their expectations so I will take it into consideration and implement these things.

My aim or the survey monkey is for them to answer the survey so I will know their preferences and their expectations.
Music Subculture
I intended on finding out what music and subcultures believes that they can relate to my channel and music that actually gives viewers an idea of what the channel is all about.

My aim is for the music and subculture to be  relatable to my focus group which will make  them feel as though they were accepted by the community.
My aim of using survey Monkey is to get their opinion on what kind of sounds they  listen to.

Task 5b)
Summary - what did you find out from your research into TARGET AUDIENCE
Use the following words in your response
What were the findings from your TARGET audience research
What were the findings from your FOCUS GROUP
What were the findings from your SURVEY MONKEY
TARGET - Age, Gender, Ethnicity
As a result of those who participated in my focus group are those around the age of  16-25. The split between males and females was quite fair which means then therefore means that i would  have to make my ident around something that  appeals to both male and females who are the target audience.

Those who have been identified to be the target audience seem to like things that have a  creative twist.
From my survey monkey, i found out that 100% of people chose age 16-25.
Preferences & expectations
The three examples in which was put on my blog which was shown during the focus group, it then became adamant that they expected to see fast pace editing, music, colours and a logo in my ident.

i found out that my focus group also liked the three examples that i showed them and they liked the concept of my idea expected me to watch more idents such as MTV idents for ideas about the theme and colours.
From the survey monkey, my target audience liked the three Ident concepts and they feel that if i can put some of those things which they liked into my own idea then the same way they liked the other dents they they will like mine also.
Music Subculture

i found out that my target audience were a bit broad and different demographics in the target audience liked different things so therefore when making this ident i would have to come from a neutral point of view when adding music to this ident in order to try and please the majority.

i found out that my focus group thought Hip-hop was a good choice as urban net TV.
i found out that 50% of my survey monkey audience wanted me to use hip-hop and and 50% liked a different range of things.

Task 5c)
Conclusion - how does this information develop your idea?
Cover each of  the following aspects in your response:
Your annotation – how does this affect the development of your idea?
What do you need to consider in your idea to make it effective?
TARGET - Age, Gender, Ethnicity
Targeting people between the age range of 16-25 is very crucial and also targeting black males/females. this is what my audience expect to see in my ident.

Preferences & expectations
The target audience were very receptive to the E4 colours and style i need to consider adapting the e4 colours and style as these were what the audience liked and are expecting to see in my ident, this will enable my ident to make appeal to more people and be effective.

Music Subculture
i need to try my best to come from a neutral stand point even though a number of people from my survey monkey preffered hip-hop, the ident cannot be simply hip-hop based.
