                                                Purposes Of Editing
Montage:
A montage is where the editor of the video cuts down a scene in which would have taken days and months and basically condenses into a few minutes and in team America training scene as he goes through training it speeds up but also keeps the audience captivated but most importantly they’re still engaged with the film and have not lost the plot and they are also able to see progress through out his training process.

Cross Cutting:

Cross cutting is where the editor cuts from one action to another in different locations to show that they are all happening at the same time. For example, in star wars there were different cross cuts of different locations but the essence of the cross cut is to show that they are all happening at the same time

Slow Motion:

Slow motion is where the editor slows down real life action. Slow motion is also used for dramatic effect and in the film inception slow motion is used to enhance the impact of the explosions and also how big they are. This also has an effect on the audience so that they can see the effect and also see the detail.

Jump-cut:

A jump cut is where there is a break in continuity so therefore  a flash of a character gives effect to show moving forward in time, jump cuts where originally introduced by George Melies and fight club is a good example of this.

Cuts:

This is where the editor cuts from one scene to another. This is known as cutting. It was originally taking a roll of film and physically cutting bits and sticking them together. This was used back in the days in Edwin porter’s days. A good example of this is in the film avengers. The purpose of using cuts in the avenger’s film was to see three different action events. When Thor one of the characters says ‘is that the best you got’, and it cuts to the scene where ultron minions start attacking the avengers. This carries on the story and helps the audience understand what happing or what is going to happen next.

Split screen:
This is where the editor takes two separate footages and joins it to make one. It is also a division of the screen showing two things at the same time. A good example of this would be in the snatch cousin Avi film. The purpose of using a split screen in the cousin avi film was to show the conversation of the two men that are in two different locations. As it allows the audience to see bought perspective at the same time it also makes it easier for the creators of the film to film. What I mean is that instead of going back and forth with the conversation (which would be longer to edit) i is easier to just put in a split screen this way you can add in more footage like the Hollywood montage.

180 degree rule:
This is where the editor establishes and maintains the screen direction of their action or actors in the scene. This is known as the 180 degree rule (continuity editing) (invisible editing). The 180 degree rule was used when the man opened the first door in the  Continuity Sequence - Step by Step video, then we see the man again however we see him from the inside of the building opening the second door. This is to show flow and to show that the man did not just disappear has he walked through the first door. This allows the audience to be engaged in the scene.
